Last Sunday, I went to the discovery of Annecy, an alpine town in the Haute Savoie region of France.
After a short 45 minutes drive from Geneva (or a three-hour 50 train ride from Paris) you’ll reach the city at the tip of the stunningly lake Annecy and overlooking the Rhône-Alpes hills.
With it’s winding cobblestone streets lined by pastel houses, it’s quaint canals and tiny bridges, Annecy is referred to as the Venice of the Alps, and I couldn’t agreed more.
It is an ideal destination for a day trip, especially on a sunny Sunday, when you have time to get lost in the paving streets of the old village and spend the afternoon admiring the beauty of the architecture which is pretty much exactly what I did.
We arrived in the morning before 10am, just in time to discover the Sunday market. I always cherished farmers market, but I have to admit, this is one of the best I discovered so far ! There are an exceptional range of fresh products, local cured meats, fruits and craft and the energy between the locals and tourists is delightful.
Annecy is indeed a very photogenic place, undeniably the lake but most especially the old and historic town who has preserved its medieval archtectural history in all its glory.
Later during the day we rented a little boat which is a great way to see the beauty of the hills. The lake is one of France’s largest lake and also one of the cleanest water of Europe. Renting a boat is the easy way out but for sure there is so much more to do ! Like : speed boating, sailing , water –skiing & paddle.
Last but not least, we walked along « Pont des Amours », Annecy’s Love Bridge. This bridge is a very romantic spot with magnificent views of the canals, small woods boat and, of course, the Lake. Indeed, later I heard that a legend is that if two lovers kiss on the bridge, they will stay together forever.
I only spend a couple of hours there, but it completely made me felt in love with this town, and I believe that if you spend a holiday there, there is so much more to see nearby.
